Portland, Oregon-based artist Aremy Stewart makes abstract paintings using dripped, brushed and pooled colors. Working with acrylic washes, spray paint, pastels and graphite on canvas and paper, Stewart builds up layers of pigments and saturated textures to create paintings that can be read like visual texts. These compositions strike a delicate balance between purposeful haste and controlled energy. She allows time to assist the making of the work and embraces the consequences. This process requires a courtship of skilled accident and natural unfolding. Stewart is inspired daily by her children’s approach to art-making, which is concerned solely with process not outcome. ‘Be bold and play’ is the current working motto for her studio practice. Aremy's art has been featured in magazines like Taproot and Juno, her clients include NW Natural, and her paintings are held in private collections around the world. Stewart was an artist resident at ArtsIceland in Isafjordur, Iceland during the summer of 2019. In 2020 Aremy will be a featured artist at Luke’s Frame Shop on Albina in Portland.
